Uber and Lyft, prominent rideshare companies, revolutionize transportation with user-friendly mobile apps, connecting passengers with drivers for convenient and efficient travel. To become a driver, a Criminal Background Check is required, ensuring that those entrusted with passenger transportation meet high safety requirements.

Why background check is required?
For safety, criminal background check are required to complete the application process with Uber and Lyft. These companies mandate background checks on their drivers to ensure that individuals responsible for passenger transportation meet strict safety standards, including:
- Protecting Passengers and Customers: by screening drivers, Uber and Lyft aim to provide a secure environment for passengers and customers, reduce risk, and foster trust and reliability in their services.
- Reducing a Company’s Liability Risk: thorough background checks help mitigate the risk of incidents during rides, safeguarding the companies’ reputation and minimizing legal challenges.
- Satisfying Legal Requirements and Regulation: There are now specific rules and restrictions in many local areas; hence, conducting background checks helps demonstrate the companies’ commitment to operating ethically and responsibly.
Therefore, the background check ensures passenger safety and trust, enhancing the driving experience, maintaining passenger confidence in their service and minimizing legal risks.
Types of Background Checks for Uber/Lyft Drivers:
What it involves: This initial check searches through criminal records using your name and other personal details.
Why it matters for you: It’s the first step in ensuring you meet Uber’s safety standards. This basic screening helps identify any major legal issues that might prevent you from driving.
Where to get it done: You can usually get this done through local police stations or through companies that specialize in name-based background checks. It’s a quick check of criminal records using your name and other identifying information.
RCMP Fingerprint-Based Criminal Record Check:
What it involves: This check uses your fingerprints to accurately verify if you have a criminal record.
Why it matters for you: This check might be needed in some places or if there’s something unclear in the initial name-based check that needs a closer look. Sometimes, just using your name and date of birth isn’t enough to complete the first round of screening.
Where to get it done: At Frontier One, we offer this service. It uses your fingerprints to thoroughly check your criminal record, providing a higher level of accuracy than name-based checks.
Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC):
What it involves: The Vulnerable Sector Check takes a deeper dive with fingerprint-based background screening, especially important for jobs that involve caring for vulnerable people. In some places, or for specific roles, Uber/Lyft drivers might need to get this check done too. It’s all about making sure those who might be a bit more at risk—like kids, the elderly, or people with disabilities—are in safe hands during their rides.
Why it might matter for you: While not typically required for most Uber drivers, if you’re going to transport more vulnerable populations like children or the elderly, this check might be necessary depending on local laws or specific Uber policies.
Where to get it done: You can first apply through your local police. Once the application is processed, you’ll receive a request letter from them. This letter is necessary to move forward with the fingerprinting process. With it, you can then make an appointment with Frontier One to submit your fingerprints and continue with the check.
A Friendly Reminder:
Make sure to double-check with Uber and any local regulatory bodies to find out exactly what’s required in your area. The rules can vary a lot depending on where you are, and you’ll want to be fully prepared and compliant before hitting the road.
