Navigating Through the Process: A Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining RCMP Certified Background Checks
Step 1: Ensure Necessity
Ensure an RCMP report is required for your purpose (e.g., job, visa).
If you are asked to provide biometrics for the Government of Canada, you will have to go to Service Canada for their services.
If you are asked to obtain a RCMP criminal record check, you will need to go to an RCMP accredited private agency, such as F1 Fingerprint (Frontier One Inc), to get your fingerprints taken.
Step 2: Prepare Documents
- Obtain a request letter/email/instructions (depending on your case, these might be optional or required).
- For example:
- If you are applying for PR and need your fingerprints to be taken, most of the time, we will not require any other documents other than your 2 IDs.
- If you are applying for your Citizenship, we will need to see the letter that you received from IRCC to input your application number in your fingerprint application, and let the RCMP know where to directly send your application.
- If you are applying for a Federal job, there will be a very specific instruction that we will need to check and follow to make sure that your application will be send to the right department.
- For example:
- Provide 2 valid IDs (note: credit card, SIN card, and Health Card are not accepted). Click here to see list of approved IDs

Step 4: Fingerprinting
Our technicians will ask you to fill out a request form and check your 2 IDs. We will enter your information into the F1 system and ask you to verify all information before proceeding to capture your fingerprints with our LiveScan.
To ensure the quality of your fingerprints, please apply lotion daily before bedtime a few days ahead , but NOT on the date of the appointment.
Step 5: Submission
Once your fingerprints are captured, we will submit them directly and immediately to the RCMP via the CCRTIS Program. We do not retain your fingerprints in our system, and the RCMP will destroy your fingerprints after completing the check.
Step 6: Wait
The processing time is usually 2-4 weeks if you do not have any type of records. If a record is found, it might take up to 120 business days.
For most applications, we will submit your fingerprints electronically to the RCMP right after we have taken your fingerprints. We will then give you a confirmation that we your applicant have been sent it to RCMP sever, including how to contact RCMP if anything happens, and what is your DCN so you can provide it to the officer when asked.
Step 7: Receive Report
Obtain and review your RCMP report once processed.
If your fingerprints are taken for Citizenship Application, or for Federal Employer, you will not receive any report back, your result will be sent directly to IRCC, or any Government Department as instructed in your letter.
If you want your fingerprints to be sent to a third party, please let us know before we submit your applications. And that applications will be sent to the third party, please provide them with your DCN so they can check your application on your behalf.
