Ever wondered how you can easily check your criminal record online in Canada? This process is straightforward and accessible, allowing individuals to review their personal history conveniently through local police websites, stations, or private agents. Moreover, it efficiently informs individuals about their legal standing and finds frequent use for personal and employment-related purposes.
A name-based check
A non-certified criminal record check is name-based and does not need fingerprint submission. Easy and fast, the process takes only a few minutes. This is the most common type of background check and if you wish to do it, you can either go to your regional police website, visit a police station nearby in person, or use a private third-party agent.
Unfortunately, name-based checks are not widely accepted in many cases. For example:
- Immigration to Canada or to a foreign country
- Security Clearance for Federal Employment
- Adoption
- Record Suspension (Pardon)
- Visa or Border Crossing, etc.
For all reasons above, the applicant will need to do a certified criminal record check that requires fingerprint submission (in person). Besides that, private companies usually conduct or request a name-based background check before hiring new employees. However, if the check is inclusive, a fingerprint-based background check is then performed.

Accordingly, as an accredited fingerprint agency recognized by the RCMP, Frontier One Inc. can electronically capture and submit your fingerprints to the RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS). RCMP will then mail your PCC back to your home address or to a third party after processing your application.
Processing time
Generally ,it’s worth noting that the processing time for your criminal record check depends entirely on the RCMP, and we do not have control over this aspect. According to our experience, we can estimate a typical processing time with the RCMP.
If there is no match to a criminal record, then RCMP needs 3 business days to process your application, plus a mailing time of 2-3 weeks (regular mail by Canada Post).
Otherwise, if a potential match to a criminal record requires manual processing, the RCMP takes 120 business days to process your application, plus additional time for mailing via Canada Post.
